At Bender, we consider the kitchen the center of the home. It’s where friends and family gather, meals are created, and memories are made. When it comes to design, choosing timeless, durable materials for your home’s kitchen can be a daunting task because of the wide variety of options now available. Below, we have broken down one of the most common questions we hear – how to choose the correct farmhouse sink material for your space. Read on for our suggestions.

Fireclay – A traditional and beautiful option, fireclay farmhouse sinks offer quite a few benefits. First, they are available in a variety of colors and sizes, they are rust-proof, and they are quite durable. That said, since the material is clay, this option can chip if users are not careful when washing large pots and pans.

Enamel Cast Iron – Durable and scratch resistant, enamel cast iron sinks are relatively easy to maintain and can last for years. They generally come in a glossy white finish that is timeless in most any kitchen. However, it’s important to consider that this option is a bit more vulnerable to issues like rusting, staining, and chipping so they must be cared for appropriately.

Copper – The distinctive color and patina of copper sinks can be a striking addition in a kitchen. They are durable and naturally antibacterial. This option is generally a little pricier and more complicated to install. They should be carefully maintained as abrasive cleaners and overheating can cause discoloration.

Stainless Steel – An affordable option, stainless steel farmhouse sinks are easy to match to existing appliances. They are heat and stain resistant, but are prone to showing watermarks and scratches.

Natural Stone – Marble or other natural stone options can be designed to flow seamlessly with natural stone countertops. They are beautiful, rust proof, and dent and heat resistant. They are, however, more expensive and require regular sealing.

Each sink material has its own pros and cons, and it’s important to consider these when determining which option is right for your needs. Our design specialists at Bender are happy to walk you through each option and guide you during the decision-making process.
